John 2: 13-22
“Take these things away; you shall not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
When I was in Jerusalem, we walked among the ruins where this story took place. Our guide, David, told us that the money changers were making a profit converting the money. Jesus was annoyed that they were making a profit when the travelers were returning to Jerusalem for the high holy days.
Did Jesus over act? Have you ever sought justice when you saw someone making a profit beyond what was reasonable? (Just go to a ball game, concert or tennis match and buy a bottle of water.)
Even when Jesus knew his days were numbered, he was still trying to show us how to live.
Prayer: Holy God, Remind us that we can make a profit without going overboard. Teach us how to treat each other. Guide us to keep our eyes on the cross. Amen
