1 Timothy 1:12-20
“But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.”
In this season of leafless trees, cold wind, and icy streets it is easy to see things in terms of a lack rather than in terms of abundance. In the fall we speak of a plentiful harvest and in the spring we speak of new life. The deep winter seems like it is without.
I think this is why I find our scripture reading today is particularly helpful, hopeful, and encouraging. Sometimes the more weak and helpless we feel, the more we experience an overflowing of God’s mercy. I think that’s because when we struggle, we are more likely to humble ourselves before God. When we do that, it creates the opportunity for God to show us new things, to rekindle the warmth of our faith through love. As much as the world may appear empty and lacking, there is an overflowing abundance available to all who call upon God.
