February 1: Luke 2:22-40
"When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord...When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee...The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom."
This Sunday, we celebrate the story of Jesus being presented at the temple as a child. There aren't many stories in the Bible about Jesus as a child. We usually think of the baby Jesus in the manger and then we think of the Jesus who was so wisely preaching and teaching, but we don't have much imagery of Jesus the child.
Some of us are away this weekend at the Intergenerational retreat in the Catskills. We are reminded by the young ones here of the joys of childhood and the importance of family life. It's a wonderful thing to reflect on a young Jesus sharing in games and laughing among his siblings and parents. We serve a God who become fully human, even living through the joys and development of a child.
